Traditional Dance Forms

Folk and martial dances that express the history, tales, and agricultural seasons of Jharkhand.

Seraikela Chhau

An internationally recognized martial dance-drama representing the princely heritage of Seraikela-Kharsawan. Dancers wear elaborate clay masks depicting mythological characters from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The dance involves vigorous leg movements, mock combat steps, and stylized bird-like movements, performed during the spring Chaitra Parva festival.

Jhumar Dance

Jhumar is the most popular community dance of Jharkhand, performed during harvest and festival seasons. Dancers hold hands to form a circular ring, moving in rhythm to the beats of Mandar and Nagara drums. There are different variations, such as Mardani Jhumar (performed by men with high energy) and Janani Jhumar (a graceful dance performed by women).

Domkach

A traditional folk dance performed during weddings. When the groom\'s procession departs for the bride\'s house, the women of the family stay back and perform Domkach throughout the night in the courtyard, accompanied by humorous songs and play-acting to keep the household awake and safe.

Fagua Dance

A high-energy, colorful folk dance performed during Holi (locally called Fagua). Dancers sing local compositions describing the spring season, throwing gulal (colorful powders) on each other, accompanied by enthusiastic drum beats.

Mandar (Tumdak)

The Mandar is the national instrument of tribal Jharkhand. It is a double-headed clay drum shaped like a cylinder, hung around the neck, and beaten with both hands. It produces a deep, rumbling bass sound that dictates the dance pace.

Nagara & Dhak

The Nagara is a large kettle drum beaten with wooden sticks to create loud, echoing beats during Chhau performances. The Dhak is a huge cylindrical drum covered in feathers, beaten with sticks, commonly heard during Durga Puja.

Bansi & Tuhila

The Bansi is a traditional bamboo flute producing sweet melodies. The Tuhila is a rare, ancient single-stringed pluck instrument crafted from a dried hollow gourd, sal wood, and horsehair string, producing high-pitched tones.
