Overview

The Martello Tower in Pakur is a rare and historic circular masonry defense fort constructed in 1856 by the British East India Company under the direction of Sir Martin. Standing about 30 feet tall, the tower was designed to defend British administrative and military outposts from the arrows and bows of the Santhal tribal fighters led by Sidhu and Kanhu Murmu during the famous Santhal Rebellion (Santhal Hool) of 1855. Built with local bricks and limestone mortar, the tower has gun loop slots on its circular walls and a flat roof for mounting light artillery. Located in the heart of Pakur town, the tower is now a protected monument situated inside a beautifully maintained municipal park, serving as a solemn reminder of tribal resistance and British military architecture.

History & Significance

During the Santhal Rebellion of 1855, the local Santhal rebels rose against the exploitative Zamindari system and British rule, targeting railway lines and military stations. Sir Martin built the tower to provide a secure defense post. The rebellion ultimately led to the creation of the Santhal Pargana district.
