Overview

Chandil Dam, built across the Subarnarekha River in the Seraikela Kharsawan district of Jharkhand, is one of the most popular water-tourism destinations in the state. The dam creates a massive, deep reservoir surrounded by green rolling hills and deciduous forests. It is highly popular for speed boating, row boating, and lakeside picnics. The dam has a height of 220 metres, and its reservoir hosts a variety of migratory bird species during the winter season. The adjacent museum houses ancient rock-cut statues and historic artifacts discovered during the dam's excavation.

History & Significance

Constructed as part of the Subarnarekha Multipurpose Project in the late 20th century, the dam was built to address irrigation and water needs of Jamshedpur and surrounding industrial areas. The site has evolved into a major eco-tourism resort.
