Overview

Dimna Lake is a beautiful artificial reservoir located in the East Singhbhum district of Jharkhand, nestled at the foothills of the Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary and about 15 km from Jamshedpur city. Built by Tata Steel, the lake serves as the primary source of drinking water for the steel city of Jamshedpur. The lake is surrounded by lush green hills, manicured lakeside gardens, and dense forests, creating a peaceful oasis away from the industrial city. It is a highly popular spot for boating, birdwatching, and morning walks. During the winter season, the lake becomes a major hub for picnickers and is a nesting ground for several migratory bird species.

History & Significance

The lake was constructed in the 1940s by Tata Steel (then TISCO) under the direction of Sir Ardeshir Dalal to address the water requirements of the expanding steel plant and township. The dam and reservoir were designed to blend with the natural topography of the Dalma hills.
