Overview
Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary, situated in the Dalma Hills near Jamshedpur, covers approximately 193 square kilometres of undulating terrain with dense forests, grasslands, and rocky hilltops. The sanctuary is most famous for the annual migration of wild elephants from the Dalma hills to the plains of neighbouring West Bengal during the winter months (November–February), a spectacular natural event that attracts wildlife enthusiasts from across the country. Besides elephants, the sanctuary is home to barking deer, sloth bears, giant squirrels, wild boars, and over 130 species of birds. The highest point, Dalma peak at 3,000 feet, offers commanding views of the surrounding landscapes and the distant Subarnarekha River.
History & Significance
The sanctuary was established in 1975 to protect the elephant population and their habitat. The Dalma Hills have been an important elephant corridor for centuries, connecting the forests of Jharkhand with those of West Bengal and Odisha.
