Overview
Luguburu Ghanta Bari Dharamgarh is the most sacred and important international pilgrimage destination for the Santhal tribe, located on the Lugu Hill (Lugu Pahar) in the Bokaro district of Jharkhand. Nested in the dense forests of the Lalpania range, this site is considered the birthplace of the Santhal culture and social system. According to Santhal beliefs, Lugu Baba (the chief architect of Santhali customs) held a historic assembly here under a sacred tree that lasted for 12 years to draft the rules of their community. The main shrine sits on a hilltop surrounded by natural waterfalls, springs, and rocky cliffs. Every year during Kartik Purnima (usually in November), hundreds of thousands of Santhal tribals from all over India (and neighboring countries like Nepal and Bangladesh) climb the hill to perform traditional prayers and cultural rituals.
History & Significance
The site has been a spiritual hub for Santhal tribal heritage for millennia. In the late 20th century, a concerted effort was made by tribal elders and the government to document the sacred groves and establish Luguburu Ghanta Bari Dharamgarh as a protected national heritage site.
