Overview

Tenughat Dam, built across the Damodar River in the Bokaro district of Jharkhand, is one of the largest earthen (soil) dams in India. The dam stands about 55 metres tall and creates a massive, sprawling reservoir bordered by dense deciduous forests and low hills. It serves as a primary source of industrial and domestic water for the Bokaro Steel City and surrounding coal belt areas. The vast expanse of water attracts numerous nature lovers and picnickers during winter, and is a quiet spot for birdwatching and enjoying sunsets over the calm reservoir.

History & Significance

Constructed in the 1970s by the Government of Bihar (now Jharkhand) to supply water to the Bokaro Steel Plant, it is a key engineering feat of the region, designed entirely out of earth and concrete elements.
