Overview

Maithon Dam, built on the Barakar River in Dhanbad district, is a remarkable feat of engineering and a popular recreational destination. Commissioned in 1957, it is notable for being India's first dam with an underground power station. The massive reservoir stretches across 65 square kilometres, creating a beautiful lake surrounded by forested hills. The dam offers boating facilities, lakeside parks, and a deer park. The sunsets over the reservoir are particularly spectacular, painting the water and sky in warm hues. Maithon is a popular weekend getaway for residents of Dhanbad, Bokaro, and Asansol.

History & Significance

Maithon Dam is part of the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) project, inspired by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) model of the United States. The dam was built to control flooding in the Damodar Valley, which was historically called the "River of Sorrow" due to devastating floods.
