Parasnath Hill, at 1,365 metres (4,478 feet), is the highest mountain in Jharkhand and one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites for Jains worldwide. Known as Shikharji or Sammet Shikhar, the hilltop houses 20 Jain Tonks (shrines) marking the spots where 20 of the 24 Jain Tirthankaras attained Moksha (liberation). The 28-kilometre pilgrimage trek from Madhuban at the base to the summit and back passes through dense forests rich in biodiversity. The hill is also an ecological treasure, home to diverse flora and fauna including elephants, sloth bears, and rare orchids.
Parasnath Hill derives its name from Parshvanatha, the 23rd Tirthankara, who is believed to have attained Nirvana here. The site has been a major Jain pilgrimage for over two millennia. The 20 shrines on the summit commemorate the liberation sites of different Tirthankaras and are maintained by the Jain community.
