Overview

Mandro Fossil Park, located in the Sahibganj district of Jharkhand, is a globally unique paleontological and geological site managed by the Forest Department. Situated in the Rajmahal Hills near Mandro, the park contains rare petrified plant fossils (primarily cycads and conifers) dating back to the Jurassic period, approximately 150 million years ago. The park features an indoor museum with informative displays, fossils preserved in their natural positions embedded in rocks, and beautiful walking paths surrounded by botanical gardens. It serves as a major scientific educational center and an offbeat attraction for geology enthusiasts and travelers.

History & Significance

The Rajmahal Hills were formed due to intense volcanic eruptions during the Jurassic era. The lava flows covered the regional forests, petrifying the ancient trees and preserving them as fossils. The site was scientifically surveyed and declared a protected fossil reserve in the late 20th century.
