Overview

The Sun Temple in Bundu, about 55 km from Ranchi, is a relatively modern temple dedicated to Lord Surya (the Sun God). Built on a hillock, the temple's architecture is inspired by the iconic Konark Sun Temple of Odisha. The temple features chariot-shaped design elements, intricate carvings, and a peaceful ambiance surrounded by natural greenery. While not as ancient as many other temples in Jharkhand, the Sun Temple has become an important religious and tourist destination, especially popular during Chhath Puja — the Sun worship festival widely celebrated in Jharkhand and Bihar.

The Sun Temple was built in recent decades as a tribute to the ancient sun-worship traditions prevalent among the tribal and Hindu communities of the Chotanagpur region. Chhath Puja, the four-day festival dedicated to the Sun God, is the most significant festival in the region.
