Overview
Hundru Falls is one of the most magnificent waterfalls in Jharkhand, located on the Subarnarekha River about 45 kilometres from Ranchi. The water plunges from a height of 98 metres (322 feet) into a massive pool below, creating a spectacular sight especially during and after the monsoon season. The falls are surrounded by dense deciduous forests and rocky gorges that provide a dramatic backdrop for photography and exploration. A well-maintained stairway of over 700 steps leads visitors down to the base pool, where the mist from the falls creates a refreshing microclimate. The pool at the base is popular for bathing, though visitors should exercise caution during heavy flow seasons.
History & Significance
Hundru Falls has been a natural landmark of the Chotanagpur Plateau for centuries. The name "Hundru" is derived from the local Mundari word for "cascade." The falls have been a popular picnic spot since the British colonial era and have been featured in numerous Jharkhand tourism campaigns. The geological formation of the falls is attributed to the volcanic basalt rock formations of the Chotanagpur region.
