Overview

Jonha Falls, also known as Gautamdhara, is a picturesque 43-metre waterfall on the Gunga river, located approximately 40 km from Ranchi. What makes this waterfall truly special is the ancient Buddhist temple nestled at its base, adding spiritual significance to the natural beauty. The falls cascade down from a rocky cliff into a serene pool, creating a tranquil atmosphere. During monsoon, the water flow intensifies dramatically, making it a spectacular sight. The journey down involves descending approximately 450 stone steps through lush forest, offering glimpses of the falls at various angles.

History & Significance

Legend has it that Gautam Rishi (an ancient sage) meditated at this very spot. The Buddhist temple at the base houses a statue of Lord Buddha in a meditative pose and is believed to date back several centuries. The site blends Hindu and Buddhist heritage, reflecting the pluralistic religious history of the Chotanagpur region.
