Overview

Surajkund Hot Springs, located in the Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand (near Barkatha), is famous for holding one of the hottest natural spring waters in India, with water emerging at temperatures between 87°C and 88°C (188°F to 190°F). The spring contains high concentrations of sulphur and other minerals, which are believed to have therapeutic and skin-healing properties. The thermal waters emerge in five separate Kunds (pools) named after Hindu deities: Surya, Lakshman, Ram, Sita, and Brahmakund. Surya Kund is the hottest of all. The site attracts numerous tourists, scientific researchers, and pilgrims, especially during the annual Makar Sankranti fair in January. A small cold-water spring runs adjacent to the hot springs, creating a fascinating geological contrast.

History & Significance

The hot springs have been recognized since ancient times for their religious and thermal significance. Scientists have studied the geothermal potential of Surajkund as a source for eco-friendly green energy. The local temples around the hot springs date back to the early medieval era.
