Overview

Tilaiya Dam, built on the Barakar River in Koderma district, holds the historic distinction of being the very first dam constructed under the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) project in 1953. The dam creates a picturesque reservoir surrounded by low hills and sparse vegetation. The serene water body, dotted with small islands during low water levels, provides a tranquil escape from the bustle of nearby towns. The dam and its surroundings offer opportunities for boating, bird watching, and peaceful walks along the reservoir banks.

History & Significance

Tilaiya Dam was the first of four multipurpose dams built under the DVC, India's first large-scale river valley development project modelled after the Tennessee Valley Authority. The foundation stone was laid by Jawaharlal Nehru in 1950.
