Overview

The Jagannath Temple in Ranchi, built in 1691 by the Nagvanshi King Thakur Ani Nath Shahdeo, sits atop a hill in the Dhurwa area of the city. Inspired by the famous Jagannath Temple of Puri in Odisha, this temple is one of the most important religious and cultural landmarks of Ranchi. The temple complex features a 35-foot-tall main tower and houses the idols of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra. The annual Rath Yatra festival (chariot procession) held in June–July draws massive crowds and is the biggest festival celebrated in Ranchi.

History & Significance

The temple was constructed in 1691 by Thakur Ani Nath Shahdeo of the Nagvanshi dynasty, the oldest ruling dynasty of Jharkhand. The Nagvanshi kings had close cultural ties with Odisha, which inspired the construction of this Jagannath temple. The Rath Yatra tradition has been continuously celebrated here for over 300 years.
