McCluskieganj is a unique settlement located about 60 km from Ranchi, originally established in 1933 as a homeland for the Anglo-Indian community by Ernest Timothy McCluskie. The town retains its colonial-era charm with bungalows featuring Gothic arches, stained-glass windows, and sprawling gardens surrounded by sal forests. Though the Anglo-Indian population has dwindled, the town still maintains its distinctive character with a few original families keeping the culture alive. The quiet streets lined with old colonial bungalows and churches create an atmosphere that feels like stepping back in time. The surrounding forests are rich in wildlife and offer excellent walking trails.

History & Significance

In 1933, Ernest Timothy McCluskie, a wealthy Anglo-Indian from Calcutta, envisioned creating a homeland for the Anglo-Indian community on the Chotanagpur Plateau. He purchased 10,000 acres and established the settlement, which at its peak housed about 400 Anglo-Indian families. Post-independence, many residents emigrated to England and Australia, but the town's architectural heritage remains.
